This is a simple representation of integration.
Integration involves three key components:
- Middleware (center or hub) orchestrates the integration process. It is a critical component for integration configuration;
- Web Services (blue arrows) transfers information between the middleware and end application or database;
- An Adapter (orange puzzle piece) connects the end application or database to the middleware

BizTalk Server, a middleware platform by Microsoft, has a strong history of providing enterprise integration solutions.
Pre-Built or Custom Adapters (the orange puzzle piece):
is a software component that enables you to easily send messages in and out of an application or database, and into the BizTalk Server.
The end result is that data can be shared across different applications or databases. Oracle, Prolog, Viewpoint, JD Edwards, and many more common AEC industry applications can be connected to each other.
