Mobile And The Death of the Desktop Computer

AdobeStock_88855189The numbers just don’t lie.

The market for PCs continues its precipitous drop in sales last year. According to a recent Gartner report, worldwide PC shipments totaled 68.4 million units in Q2 2015, a 9.5 percent dip from Q2, 2014. The report further predicts an overall decline of 4.4 percent in 2015.

The biggest drop in nearly two years, market researchers have reported, once again reaffirming that personal computers are on their way out and mobile is taking it’s place.

[contact-form-7 id=”6186″ title=”Inpage Contact Form” html_id=”sidebar_contact”]

An interesting statistic by researchers at IDC, stated that 66.1 million PCs had been shipped in the 2nd quarter of 2015. What is interesting is that Apple noted that it had sold 61 million iPhones during that same quarter. I do not have the numbers for tablets and other smart phone makers, but I think it is safe to say that over 120 million new mobile devices  hit the streets in 2015.

Apple revenue also reflects the growing trend away from desktop computers. Of Apple’s revenue for the 2nd quarter of 2015, Macs accounted for less that 10% of the total revenue. The iPhone was almost 70% of that total.

Engineers on building site controlling projectThe trend lines continue to go down for the PC market, there is no denying it. Mobile has effectively dominated the hardware environment. And that is now being reflected across the internet with responsive website design, and Google’s recent announcement of their focus on search results for mobile devices. Facebook has also announced in their last share holders meeting that mobile was their main focus moving forward.

I was looking through our website analytics this afternoon and was surprised to see mobile devices topping the list of how users accessed our website. Users on the move and using their mobile devices to get information on demand in real time.

And that paradigm shift from a stationary computing platform, to a mobile device is a natural one if you think about it. This shift is not being forced upon us from some higher authority. It is a natural organic shift that is taking place as technology continues to improve the mobile experience.

And why?

AdobeStock_83070874Who wants to sit in a cubicle inside an office under fluorescent lights for 8 hours? If you are like me, you want to get outside and interact with others. Go to the cafe down the street or local library where others are working on their mobile devices and real collaboration can take place. Interacting with others, whether from your work place or not, can and does trigger new ways of thinking, which in the end leads to new ways of doing business and ultimately an increase in productivity.

The world is hungry for this opportunity to break free of the walls of the office and start to interact with each other in new and exciting ways. It’s almost Darwinian.

Mobile.

I’ve gone over the benefits of bringing a business 100% mobile in previous website posts here. The brief is:

  • Cost efficiency
  • Reduction of maintenance requirements
  • Flexibility and scalability of resources
  • On demand user administration
  • 24/7 user support
  • Off-site backup of critical data
  • Regular maintenance and software upgrades
  • Employee mobility anywhere, anytime
  • Freedom to focus on core business

Enterprise Mobility – A Key Component to Business Efficiency

Entrepreneur on building site using tablet

Entrepreneur on building site using tablet

There are many components to increasing business efficiency. One of those components is giving your employees access to their digital work space anywhere, anytime. This is exactly what enterprise mobility is.

In a nutshell, enterprise mobility is the idea of moving files, software and desktops to a server that is accessible via the internet, from any connected device. Laptops, tablets, smart phones all become access points to view data, open software and view the users’ personal desktop.

This real-time access, allows the user to move between job sites, meetings and home, without losing the ability to access critical data and information needed to keep the project moving forward.

Enterprise mobility is a growing trend as more and more companies realize the power and potential of a mobile workforce outside of the physical office environment. Corporate data is now fluid. Moving from one user to another in seconds. One location to another location across the globe. An employee works on a presentation at their local Starbucks in the morning using their laptop. That afternoon, they sit down with others on their team at the job site to give the presentation on their iPad.

Added Value: Mobility And Construction Projects

AdobeStock_88855189Today, as never before, mobile solutions are a critical component of any construction project life cycle. Architects, engineers, and project managers, to name a few, all need to communicate in real time. Posting and sharing critical job site data across the entire team can be the difference between success and failure of any project.

Add to this the fact that rarely are any of the team members at the same location, at the same time. Virtual offices, virtual desktops, access to files and data, and applications across platforms are at the center of an effective mobile team. Construction companies now have multiple office and job sites, that require the team member to be “connected” at any given time.

With today’s economy, staying competitive means being more productive. Mobile solutions, along with cloud hosted applications, data and desktop are a requirement in the productivity equation. Optimizing operations and the stream of job site information, allows team members to do their job faster and with less costly errors.

Project plans, budgeting, resources, filed issues, contact information can all be accessed when that data is hosted in a cloud environment. Enterprise application hosting allows those critical applications to be accessible via any thin client or mobile device. Virtual desktops bring the familiarity of a Windows desktop environment from anywhere that team member might be working. It all adds up to access to valuable information to the project team anywhere, anytime.

AdobeStock_80460584To boil it down, here are some of the major points to consider about cloud hosting data, apps and desktops.

  • Clear lines of communication: ALL team members can share data, images and job site information. The field office and the home office are connected virtually. Everyone knows what is going on with the project, at any given time.
  • Better Analysis: Correct data and current data are critical to getting the big picture on a project. Accounting, payroll, building plans, workforce data can all be analyzed using real time data.
  • Cost efficiency
  • Reduction of maintenance requirements
  • Flexibility and scalability of resources
  • On demand user administration
  • 24/7 user support
  • Off-site backup of critical data
  • Regular maintenance and software upgrades
  • Employee mobility anywhere, anytime
  • Freedom to focus on core business

At this point, it is worth the time and effort for IT departments to take a hard look at this opportunity, and at a minimum do some cost/productivity comparisons. Enterprise Mobility is Changing the Definition of 'The Office'

AdobeStock_83070874The Office. Where exactly is that anymore? We all can say it’s located at such and such address, but does every employee go to the office everyday to work? Or if they do, the bigger question is, do they need to go to the office to work? Can they work from their home, the job site, a cafe or even the beach?

The very idea of forcing your staff to go to an official office with “their desk” is quickly becoming an out of date idea. Why? Well you probably already know the answer which is the mobile desktop. No longer are we chained to a specific location to perform our work duties. Workers can now harness the multitude of advantages in our current technological state. Mobile devices such as tablets, mobile phones and even laptops, along with cloud services have broken those chains. And management, and especially IT departments, should be rejoicing. The amount of overhead costs associated with a physical office, with individual workstations can be wiped off the budget sheet. Downsizing of office infrastructure, workstations, furniture, physical space leads to immediate cost savings and headaches.

[contact-form-7 id=”6186″ title=”Inpage Contact Form” html_id=”sidebar_contact”]

Enterprise mobility is a growing trend as more and more companies realize the power and potential of a mobile workforce outside of the physical office environment. Corporate data is now fluid. AdobeStock_44575060The power of cloud hosted applications, software, data and desktops has literally revolutionized how we are working. And I believe we are just beginning to see what this means for all of us in our daily lives. New technologies and ways of interacting with data are becoming available on a daily basis. Stuff of science fiction you might say.
Here is a partial list of what you can expect by migrating your applications, software, data and desktops to the cloud:

  • Access from any device, i.e. smart phone, tablet, laptop, desktop
  • Access from a browser
  • No downloads
  • Access to all your files
  • Access to any software you want to install
  • Access to any file or folder
  • No more syncing
  • File transfer to and from your virtual desktop
  • Secure file storage
  • Backup all your files and settings
  • Software upgrades
  • 24/7 online support
  • Low per user cost
  • No hardware to worry about

Hosted Software Explained

AdobeStock_88855189With all the news about cloud hosting and the buzzwords surrounding it, I thought it makes sense to take a minute and explain a little bit about what “hosted software” is.

As the term suggests, it is your software that is installed and accessed on a remote server, offsite from the traditional “office”. The list of benefits is long, but that is for another article.

There are two types of hosted software. Software hosted by the manufacturer on a subscription basis (Software As A Service or SaaS), and software that has been purchased and installed on remote servers to be accessed by end users. Both types of installation can be accessed via the internet and a web browser. Traditionally the software has been focused on a desktop or laptop interface, but more and more these software applications are accessible via handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones.

Hosted software is not installed on a user’s machine, but instead installed on a remote server and accessed via a web browser, much like going to a website and using Gmail for example. Computing power and data processing are not dependant on the local machine, and are done solely on the remote server. In this case, the end user can get away with using a low power computer that only needs to run a web browser. In days past, end users had to have high end latest model computers to run many of the popular software programs. With hosted software, the processing power of one server can be centralized and taken advantage of by many end users.

Updates, patches and upgrades are all done on the one central remote server, as opposed to all the individual end user computers. This allows the closing of potentially damaging security holes in the local infrastructure.

Business Continuity and the Cloud: How Prepared Are You?

How long can your business sustain being offline? A month? A few days?

Ideally this is a question that you never want to face—nor do many expect that they will need to face in this day-and-age of always-on, ever-connected technologies. But the truth of the matter is that business continuity must remain omnipresent in your thinking as an IT professional.

Business continuity can be defined as such: A loosely-defined set of planning, preparatory and related activities which are intended to ensure that an organization’s critical business functions will either continue to operate despite serious incidents or disasters that might otherwise have interrupted them, or will be recovered to an operational state within a reasonably short period.

Yes, even the cloud can be vulnerable.

Look no further than last year when an expired SSL certificate was linked to taking the Windows Azure storage cloud offline for more than a day. It happens. But the thing to keep in mind is this: Having updated disaster recovery procedures and policies that take into account using the cloud are essential.

[contact-form-7 id=”6186″ title=”Inpage Contact Form” html_id=”sidebar_contact”]

Planning for Disaster

Here’s an interesting fact: Up to seven days is the timeframe that the majority of businesses are preparing to be offline. A recent study on Business Continuity from Gartner showed that 75% of respondents were planning for such a timeframe—and only 3% planned for an outage that might last a month or longer.

The idea of your business systems going down for longer than a month should make you feel sick to your stomach. In fact, being down a month is something most businesses wouldn’t be able to stomach, period. But I’ll go out on a limb and say that the chances of that occurring are trending towards ‘slim-to-none’.

For me, the more revealing statistic is the 86% of organizations that say they found themselves needing to enact a recovery plan in the past 24 months. Actually, no—this is the more revealing stat: The majority of organizations have little ability to determine if their business continuity program is effective. Here’s a closer look:

  • 35% use exercise results
  • 30% use status metrics
  • 27% use scorecards
  • Nearly half rely on audit reports

Take-Action Techniques

Recommendations from Gartner include the idea of build a three-year business continuity management program improvement road map based on annual maturity assessments; assessing that program to get a clear sense as to the longest stretch of time you could sustain under disaster conditions; and of course take the appropriate actions with your technology vendors.

Logo_AECCloud_Option2_300Let’s hone in on that third recommendation. This is where those partners associated with cloud-based products and services must really step up to the table. You see, for me I do believe in the promise of always on, ever-connected technologies. And with it, I feel that much of the onus is on the technology community to guarantee that your business never faces the heartache of having data go offline.

For AEC Cloud, we maintain a business continuity plan that encompasses several levels and definitions of disaster recovery. Our standard solutions all include backup and recovery services running periodically throughout the day. These services are also archived offsite.

Then there are custom solutions. These may include a range of options from automated extraction and transfer of databases and files to a customer FTP site to high availability secondary sites. Making the choice on custom solutions typically will come down to considerations related to cost and level of risk related to recovery point and recovery time objectives.

LeadershipWidget_270x215And our commitment to your business continuity doesn’t end there:

  • Uptime: 100% uptime for the hosted software, platform, and infrastructure layers over the last five years.
  • Power and Connectivity: A team of experienced engineers working diligently to minimize any outages during your working hours and rectify any issues that may occur during routine maintenance and proactive monitoring of systems health.
  • Backup: All servers are backed up on tape using. Our backup and restore systems operate on dedicated and isolated network switches, cabling and NICs, which allows for backups and restorations without consuming valuable bandwidth. Using a multi-tier architecture with inherent redundancy, our Engineering team is always keeping close watch on each element of the environment.
  • Tested, Proven: Our systems have endured numerous natural disasters with zero downtime. In fact, during the North American blackout in August 2003, our systems experienced zero power or Internet connectivity downtime.
  • The Extra Step
There are those companies, however, that are in need of just a bit more. We get it. That’s why we work with you to tailor Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Backup plans that meet your specific objectives for recovery. We do this across the entire software, platform and infrastructure stack.

After all, it’s a matter of assuring that you never need to face downtime.
